Midlands branch event – The Route to Competence in Fire Safety

The Midlands branch are hosting this event which will take place on 25th October. Speakers include the following:

Benjamin Walker MIFireE, has served as an operational officer in a busy UK Metropolitan Fire Service and trained Firefighters worldwide in Tactical Firefighting and Fire Behaviour. Considered to be a subject matter expert, he is also the author of three textbooks. Having trained firefighters throughout the world, he is renowned for making fire science accessible.  Ben will be setting the scene for the seminar with some simple revision to underscore the importance of knowledge and understanding of fire and fire behaviour to the competent person.

Peter Robinson CFIFireE, is a Fire Safety Consultant, with many years of experience in the Fire and Rescue Service and in Fire Risk Assessment (FRA).  Having conducted over 2,500 FRA’s, in a wide variety of premises and workplaces Peter will be asking some hard questions of Fire Risk assessors Who are you, what is your experience, what makes you competent, what do your FRA’s look like”?

Elfyn Edwards BSc (Hons), MIFireE, also gained many years of experience in the Fire and Rescue Service before working for a large Acute NHS Trust where he now has responsibility for Fire Strategy, Evacuation Plans, Fire Risk Assessments and Training.  Also, an independent Fire Safety consultant, Elfyn has a strong background in Fire Safety and will be talking about Fire Strategy, Compartmentation & Fire Stopping, and using a case study he will be asking delegates “What does it mean?”

Neil Gibbins QFSM, FIFireE, is a past President of the Institution of Fire Engineers and the former Deputy Chief Officer of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.  He has gained significant knowledge and experience at a strategic national level and will be concluding our seminar by providing ‘informed’ comment on post Grenfell Fire Sector developments such as the work of the Competency Steering Group, Joint Competent Authority discussions, the LABC route to assuring competence and many more issues affecting the future direction of travel of the Fire Sector.
